ZimVie Launches New Bio-Active Membrane for Dental Surgery
ZimVie Inc. (Nasdaq: ZIMV), a global life sciences company in the dental and spine sectors, has announced the recent launch of the Biotivity™ A/C Plus Membrane, a growth factor-rich membrane designed for site coverage and protection in various dental applications. This new membrane is now available in the United States.
Dental bone grafting procedures, often coupled with protective barrier membranes, play a crucial role in repairing and reconstructing the jaw, providing a solid foundation for dental implant placement. Membranes serve as both a biological and mechanical shield, preventing the infiltration of non-bone-forming cells and facilitating the migration of bone-forming cells with a slower rate into the areas of deficiency. ZimVie’s latest launch marks its expansion into the dental biomaterials market, particularly in the rapidly growing growth factor segment. The Biotivity A/C Plus Membrane is a barrier membrane enriched with a range of growth factors, cytokines, chemokines, and hyaluronic acid, all of which have been demonstrated to support effective wound healing and bone growth.
Several types of membranes are available for dental surgery, including non-resorbable options like expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), dense PTFE (dPTFE), and Titanium Mesh (Ti-Mesh). While these membranes are sturdy and maintain their shape, they require a second surgical procedure for removal. Collagen resorbable membranes have gained popularity because they provide comparable clinical results to non-resorbable ones and do not necessitate a second surgery. However, they may not retain their shape as effectively in more extensive surgeries. The global market for dental membranes is estimated at approximately $700 million annually and growing in the high single digits. Most major dental companies sell bioactive membranes for dental surgery.
Indraneel Kanaglekar, Senior Vice President and President of ZimVie Dental, stated, “We remain committed to introducing new products to the market to meet the evolving needs of our customers and to ensure that their teams have access to the most advanced solutions available. Biotivity’s triple-layer structure, thicker than conventional A/C membranes, may contribute to improved conformability and higher growth factor content.”
