Virtual Primary Care Provider HealthTap Launches Enhanced Version of Dr.A.I. Which Automates Patient Interviews
HealthTap, a prominent virtual healthcare provider in the United States focused on primary care, has unveiled an enhanced version of its Dr.A.I.™ feature, which conducts pre-appointment patient interviews using the power of GPT-4, the latest and most advanced ChatGPT system from OpenAI. Dr.A.I.™ streamlines the patient interview process by engaging in human-like conversations with patients, efficiently gathering essential information. It then compiles and presents this information to the healthcare provider in a well-organized and concise format before the online appointment.
This innovation is a significant step in automating routine aspects of the patient interview, allowing healthcare providers more time to focus on building patient relationships and having substantive discussions about their health.
According to HealthTap’s founder and CEO, Sean Mehra, “HealthTap’s Dr.A.I.™ is yet another step change in how we deliver more personalized healthcare quickly and efficiently and make it affordable to everyone.”
Dr.A.I.™ combines the advantages of reviewing fundamental health data during a doctor’s visit with the consistency, speed, and precision offered by artificial intelligence language models. Powered by ChatGPT, Dr.A.I.™ continually improves its performance by leveraging the extensive data knowledge base from OpenAI.
Dr. Geoffrey Rutledge, HealthTap’s Chief Medical Officer, highlighted the benefits of Dr.A.I.™, stating that it enables doctors to be more precise and informed during patient visits. He also emphasized the transformative potential of telemedicine in healthcare.
The medical community is increasingly embracing technology, with AI-generated responses to patient questions found to be of higher quality than physician-generated answers according to a 2023 report in JAMA®. The study randomly selected 195 exchanges from October 2022 where verified physicians responded to public medical questions and compared these physician responses with those generated by a chatbot. A team of licensed healthcare professionals evaluated the anonymized responses in triplicate. They assessed which responses were better, the quality of information provided, and the level of empathy or bedside manner demonstrated. The outcomes were rated on a scale of 1 to 5 and then compared between chatbot and physician responses. The results showed that in 78.6% of evaluations, the evaluators preferred the chatbot responses over the physician responses. Chatbot responses were significantly longer than physician responses (211 words vs. 52 words). Chatbot responses were also rated as significantly higher quality and more empathetic compared to physician responses.
