Surmodics Launches New Preside™ Medical Device Coating Technology
10-31-23 (by: Scott Gleason) Surmodics has launched a new hydrophilic medical device coating technology known as Preside™. This advanced coating technology is designed to provide superior lubricity and durability, catering to a broader spectrum of complex medical device applications. The company has previously sold its Serene hydrophilic coatings.
The Preside coatings offer a unique solution, minimizing friction and particulate generation. These properties enhance the accessibility of neurovascular applications by ensuring distal access. Moreover, they facilitate smoother navigation through challenging coronary lesions and chronic total occlusions.
The development of Preside hydrophilic coatings involved the intricate task of balancing improved lubricity to reduce friction with the creation of a durable coating that generates fewer particulates. This equilibrium enables the coatings to meet the demands of next-generation medical devices, particularly in the fields of neurovascular, coronary, and peripheral vascular applications. Importantly, these coatings can be easily integrated into existing manufacturing processes, ensuring a hassle-free implementation. Surmodics employs its proprietary Photolink™ UV curing process to apply Preside hydrophilic coatings. This technique covalently bonds the coatings to various substrates at ambient temperature, ensuring robust adhesion.
