Ginkgo Bioworks Announces Research and Biomonitoring Partnership with Serbian Government
Ginkgo Bioworks has partnered with the Government of Serbia’s Serbian Ministry of Science, Technological Development, and Innovation to establish a Startup Accelerator. This initiative will harness Ginkgo’s advanced biology platform and bioengineering proficiency to support Serbian businesses focused on biological advancements.
Participating startups within the Accelerator will gain access to Ginkgo’s comprehensive R&D services, enabling them to expedite projects that would traditionally require substantial resources and infrastructure. These resources will be made available in Serbia’s BIO4 campus. The BIO4 campus is set to open in 2026, uniting over 1,000 PhD scientists from 17 scientific institutions. The campus will form collaborations with companies in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors. Ginkgo’s role within the partnership is to extend flexible services, serving as an end-to-end synthetic biology R&D partner for BIO4-based companies working on solutions across various sectors, including pharmaceuticals, agriculture, specialty chemicals, and food production.
Furthermore, the collaboration between Ginkgo and the Serbian government will explore opportunities to develop biomonitoring capabilities within Serbia. This includes supporting capacity-building and biomonitoring initiatives in Serbia’s public health sector, implementing state-of-the-art pathogen monitoring programs at strategic locations like ports of entry and animal agricultural settings.
Austin Che, Co-Founder and Head of Startup Innovation at Ginkgo Bioworks, emphasized the transformative potential of synthetic biology and the importance of pathogen monitoring, expressing Ginkgo’s dedication to partnering with forward-thinking governments worldwide. Minister of Science, Technological Development, and Innovations in Serbia, Dr. Jelena Begovic, welcomed the partnership, emphasizing its role in strengthening the BIO4 campus and bolstering Serbia’s position in the European biotechnology landscape. The collaboration offers exciting prospects for those looking to accelerate R&D and benefit from the dynamic BIO4-Ginkgo partnership.
