Braun Launches New Introcan Safety® 2 IV Catheter to Prevent Needlestick Injuries and Blood Exposure
Braun Medical Inc. (B. Braun), a leader in infusion therapy devices, has announced launch of the Introcan Safety® 2 IV Catheter with Multi-Access Blood Control. This novel safety catheter boasts automatic needlestick protection and introduces a blood control feature that shields clinicians from blood exposure each time the hub is accessed, significantly reducing the risk of bloodborne pathogen exposure throughout the IV procedure. Safety catheters have become much more prominent in terms of use, and a recent report showed they now comprise 72% of all peripheral intravenous catheters sold. Hospitals have been highly focused on reducing needlestick injuries through enhanced training and the use of safety catheters.
Intravenous access is a pivotal component of infusion therapy, and needlestick injuries pose an ongoing threat to clinicians during their daily practices, potentially exposing them to bloodborne pathogens. Studies have demonstrated that passive, fully automatic safety devices like the Introcan Safety 2 Catheter offer two times better needlestick injury prevention compared to semi-automatic “push button” safety shields and three times better protection compared to manually sliding shields. Beyond needlestick injuries, another concern is mucocutaneous blood exposure due to blood spillage from the catheter hub. Blood control IV catheters have been shown to significantly mitigate the risk of blood exposure and reduce the workload associated with cleaning. Furthermore, survey results suggest a potential reduction in costs linked to blood cleanup time and materials. The multi-access blood control feature of the new Introcan Safety 2 Catheter is operational multiple times, further decreasing blood exposure and spillage throughout the IV process.
Chad Laity, Director of Marketing, Vascular Access, IV Systems, and Securement, emphasized the significance of proper device selection in achieving successful Peripheral Intravenous Catheter (PIVC) outcomes. He noted that the newly launched Introcan Safety 2 IV Catheter with Multi-Access Blood Control provides clinicians with another valuable option for delivering the best possible vascular access care for their patients. When combined with B. Braun’s Peripheral Advantage® Program, this new technology enhances healthcare solutions to facilitate optimal vascular access care outcomes.
